Wellbeing and Support

How students are nurtured, understood, and kept safe

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

The Thrive Program provides counsellors to teach students the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary for academic, career, and social/emotional development. Happiness and Wellbeing Centre empowers students to make decisions, solve problems, address behavioural issues, develop coping strategies, and resolve difficulties they may be experiencing. A confidential online parent referral form connects caregivers with the Leader for Provision to discuss concerns about their child's behavioural, academic, or social issues. Inclusion and Wellbeing initiatives include the Thrive Program, a Student Wellbeing Census, and school counsellors sharing wellness information through fortnightly infographics under the IES Wellness Program. Student leadership is promoted, and Physical Education supports holistic wellbeing.

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

The school provides for students with identified additional or Special Educational Needs (SEN) or Disabilities. The Inclusion Policy lists UAE MOE-recognised SEN categories including Intellectual Disability, Autism Spectrum Disorders, ADHD, Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia, Sensory Impairments, Physical Disabilities, Psycho-emotional Disorders, and Other. An Individual Education Plan (IEP) is prepared for students with SEN, with monthly progress reports and daily observations coordinated by the SENCO and Learning Support staff. Provisions include a Modified Curriculum, Modified Assessments, Learning Support Assistants, One-to-One sessions with a Special Educator, and, where needed, exemptions from languages. An Inclusive Education Action Team coordinates SEN provision and ensures equal opportunities and high achievement for students with SEND.

Mental Wellbeing

Mental health and wellbeing are central to the Student Wellbeing Policy, which defines wellbeing as health and happiness including mental health, physical health, safety, belonging, sense of purpose, achievement and success. The policy aims for students to feel confident, express emotions appropriately, maintain positive relationships, cope with stress, and learn and achieve. Roles and responsibilities for the Principal, teachers, students, and parents support safeguarding and wellbeing across the school. Wellbeing initiatives include the Happiness and Wellbeing Centre, the Thrive Program, and the IES Wellness Program, along with a Student Wellbeing Census to guide actions.

Safeguarding

The Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy prioritises safe, healthy, and fully inclusive learning environments and requires all staff to report suspected child abuse or neglect. It names the Governing Body/Principal responsibilities and designated safeguarding roles (DSL, CPO, and DSL team) and notes that reporting and procedures adhere to established protocols. The policy sets out training requirements, regular reviews, and public availability of safeguarding information, with clear lines of reporting to the DSL and, when necessary, to external authorities. The policy governing safeguarding was adopted April 2023 and is reviewed annually (next review January 2025).
