The school was established in 1972 as the Ecole des Socie9te9s Fran8aises, an initiative of the Socie9te9 des Pe9troles. In 1982 it was renamed Lyce9e Louis Massignon in honour of the French Islam scholar Louis Massignon. The current campus opened in 1980 after a land swap facilitated by the French ambassador to the UAE; since 1992, the school has been managed by AEFE, the French government agency for education abroad. A major campus expansion opened in 2012 to accommodate growth, and in February 2024 the school was accredited to the UNESCO Associated Schools Network. Since 2023, leadership has been Anne-Sophie Gouix as headmistress and Youcef Benhamou as co-headmaster.
