The school opened in 2006 as an independent PK–8 school with two campuses in the San Francisco Bay Area: Oakland and Emeryville. It is the only Spanish-English bilingual IB World School on the West Coast, offering the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and the Middle Years Programme (MYP). The school emphasizes a Spanish-English bilingual education within an IB framework and a diverse, international community.
Community is at the heart of EBI; families from over 20 countries contribute to a bilingual, international culture grounded in equity, respect, and global citizenship. EBIPA, the active Parents Association, fosters connection through events like the Back-to-School Picnic, biweekly coffee carts, and class parent networks that coordinate volunteers. Students also have leadership opportunities through Student Council and other programs. The school celebrates annual community traditions such as Latinx Heritage Month, Grand Persons Day, Black History Month, and Día de los Muertos.
EBIPA is the Escuela Bilingüe Internacional Parent Association. It helps shape the inclusive, welcoming community that defines EBI. Every parent and caregiver is automatically a member and can participate in a wide range of activities throughout the year. EBIPA organizes events such as the Back-to-School Picnic and biweekly coffee carts, coordinates a class parent network, and supports schoolwide conversations on topics of interest to parents. Parents can host cooking nights, coordinate field trip volunteers, or simply connect with other families after drop-off. EBIPA helps create the joyful community that makes EBI special.
Escuela Bilingüe Internacional is an independent IB World School serving students ages 3 to 14 with a bilingual program across PK-8. The school operates on two campuses: Alcatraz Avenue in Oakland (PK-1) and San Pablo Avenue in Emeryville (2-8). Opened in 2006, it is the West Coast's only Spanish-English bilingual IB World School offering both the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and the Middle Years Programme (MYP). The language model begins with full immersion in the early years and progresses to a balanced bilingual approach through middle school, with an Accelerated Spanish Program (ASP) to support Grades 2-8 with little or no prior Spanish. Lead teachers are native or near-native Spanish speakers from international backgrounds. The IB framework guides inquiry-based learning, global citizenship, and biliteracy, preparing graduates for top high schools and continued success. Facilities include Alcatraz PK-1 and San Pablo 2-8 campuses with libraries, arts spaces, music and PE facilities.
