Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

Flushing International High School was founded in 2004. It serves recent immigrants who are new learners of English. The mission is to help students read, write, and speak English fluently while maintaining their native languages and to empower them to speak up for themselves and for their community. The school has approximately 440 students in grades 9–12 from nearly 40 countries who speak over 20 languages.

Community

Family involvement is an important part of a child's education. Small classes and teams of teachers support students. Advisors are responsible for a small group of students. Internships in 11th grade for academic credit and after‑school clubs and activities are available. Language learning is supported across the curriculum to develop English proficiency while preserving students' native languages.
