How students are nurtured, understood, and kept safe

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

The school provides a safe, supportive environment where adults know students well. Advisors are responsible for small groups of students, providing ongoing guidance and mentorship. The school employs two bilingual school counselors to support multilingual learners and families. A school counselor and a social worker support students' well-being and assist with college and career planning. Wellness staff provide professional development and support for student well-being through the Internationals Network.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

The school serves recent immigrants who are new learners of English and aims to help each student read, write, and communicate clearly in English while maintaining their native language. English language development is integrated across all classes; all courses are designed to help students read, write, and speak English fluently while preparing them for graduation, college, and work. FIHS has students from almost 40 countries and more than 20 languages, with Spanish and Mandarin as the two most prominent language groups. English Language Learner information is provided for families, including ELL Info and ELL Parent videos in multiple languages. ELL Parent videos are available in languages such as Arabic, Bengali, Cantonese, English, French, Haitian-Creole, Mandarin, Spanish, and Urdu.

Mental Wellbeing

Lu Zeng is the school counselor. A social worker is on staff to support students' wellbeing. Michele Debono is the College Counselor & Internship Coordinator who supports college readiness and internships. The wellness staff provide support for student well-being with professional development through the Internationals Network. The environment is safe and supportive, with adults who know students well.
