Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

Founded in 1980 by Katrine Watkins and Sylvette Maschino, two teachers from the Lycée Français de New York, the French-American School of New York was created to be a truly bilingual school. It began in one room with 17 nursery and pre-kindergarten students at 111 Larchmont Avenue in Larchmont and quickly grew to occupy the building. A second campus opened in the early 1990s on East Boston Post Road and, in 1995, moved to 145 New Street in Mamaroneck to serve preschool and high school (then up to grade 10). Brigitte Sajous became co-head with Watkins in 1996, and Bob Leonhardt was appointed sole head in 2002; a third campus opened in Scarsdale in 2005 for preschool, and the high school expanded to grades 11-12 in 2007 with the French baccalaureate, later adding the International Baccalaureate in 2015. In 2020, FASNY launched the International Program (about 70% English, 30% French); in 2024, AEFE rankings placed FASNY among the top French schools abroad worldwide.

Community

Community at FASNY centers on a welcoming network of students, families, and faculty. The school builds community by hosting events throughout the year for students, parents, and staff, from casual morning coffees to signature celebrations such as the Spring Gala, Dîner en Blanc, Kermesse, and Newcomers Cocktails. The Community Service program coordinates initiatives like the Thanksgiving Soup Kitchen, Food Collection, Snack Bags, and Sai Schools in Sudan, encouraging student involvement. Each year, students who complete 100 or more hours are eligible for the Presidential Volunteer Service Award.

Parent-Teacher Association

The FASNY PTA is a vibrant, welcoming community of parents and faculty dedicated to supporting students, connecting families, and enriching school life. It welcomes new families through a buddy system, offering resources and opportunities to connect with others. It builds community by organizing events for students, parents, and faculty, including the Spring Gala, Dîner en Blanc, Kermesse, Newcomers Cocktails, and more. It promotes engagement through volunteer opportunities and social gatherings that help families feel part of school life from day one. It coordinates communication between parents and school leadership, including class-parent delegates, and fundraising supports student-centered programs and initiatives; the 2025-2026 PTA Board includes Co-Presidents, Treasurer, Secretary, Communications, High School Reps, Middle School Reps, and Coordinators for Pre/K–Lower School.
