Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

Goethe International Charter School was founded by a dedicated group of parents after the Los Angeles Unified School District approved the charter in 2008, and it opened in September 2009. The school combines a German–English dual-language immersion model with the International Baccalaureate framework, grounding learning in inquiry and international mindedness. It earned authorization to offer the IB Primary Years Programme and later expanded from elementary to middle school. The school's name honors Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, reflecting a commitment to intellectual depth and cultural exchange. It has been recognized as a California Distinguished School and California Gold Ribbon School and is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges; dozens of home languages are spoken on campus.

Community

GICS is a dynamic, collaborative, and diverse community that celebrates international cultures and perspectives. Students, families, and educators come together in a learning environment that extends beyond the classroom. Every voice matters, every culture is honored, and every student is encouraged to grow as a thoughtful, globally minded citizen. The IB framework and German language immersion support multilingual, intercultural education across disciplines.

Parent-Teacher Association

The Goethe Parent Association (GPA) is the Parent Association of Goethe International Charter School, established to support the school's mission as defined in its charter. It is a non-governing body that works with administration to build a highly engaged, inclusive community and to mobilize parent volunteers. The GPA coordinates activities, communicates with families, and manages parent-led programs to strengthen school life. It oversees GPA executive team duties including events, fundraising, communications, and cultural programming. GPA-sponsored events include Friendship Dance, Fall Festival (or Pumpkin Patch), Lantern Festival, International Flair, and other administration-approved activities.
