Peterhouse opened in 1955 as an Anglican boys' country boarding school. The headship originated from a plan proposed in 1951 by Edward Paget, Bishop of Southern Rhodesia, with Fred Snell initiating work with Canon Robert Grinham toward creating an independent senior school. The school opened with 55 boys and grew to about 360 within five years. The motto Conditur in Petra meaning Founded on Rock is carved in marble outside the Chapel, which anchors the school's spiritual and physical heart. The Chapel was dedicated in November 1958 as the grounds and staff residences were developed.
The Peterhouse Group of Schools form a family of four schools: Peterhouse Boys, Peterhouse Girls, Springvale House and Peterhouse Nursery School. The Petrean Society is the alumni organisation for former pupils and staff and maintains contact through Petrean events and reunions, as well as social and sporting events with international branches in the United Kingdom, South Africa and Australia. The Parents Association (PA) consists of twelve parents nominated by the parent body and elected, and it liaises closely with the Peterhouse Management team and represents the parents at Financial and Executive Committee Meetings. Each year group holds one Parent-Teacher meeting, with parents encouraged to attend to discuss pupil progress. Petrean events such as Petrean Socials and Petrean AGM are part of the term calendars.
Parent-Teacher Meetings are held once per year for each year group. The Parents Association (PA) is elected by the parent body and liaises with the Peterhouse Management team, representing parents at Financial and Executive Committee Meetings. The PA works with school leadership to support pupil welfare and school governance. Parents are encouraged to attend annual Parent-Teacher meetings to discuss their child's progress and to engage with teachers. The Petrean Society provides a global alumni network that complements parent and teacher collaboration by connecting families, staff and former pupils through events and mentoring.
