The school was founded in 1947 by the Missionaries of Mariannhill, a South African religious congregation founded by Austrian monk François Pfanner. The school preserves its heritage with values of respect, openness and personal development at the heart of its educational project. Construction began in 1947 on the chemin de Sainte-Catherine, and the first intake occurred in the autumn of 1948 with 11 students. In 1952 the school affiliated with Université de Montréal, and Émile Anderregen became the first official director. The first graduates were celebrated in 1954, including Gervais Giguère, who later became the second director-general (1966-1983). In 1972 the school expanded with its first major football field, and enrollment reached 126. In 1978 the arena was constructed to meet growing sports and cultural needs, and enrollment surpassed 200. The Mont Notre-Dame was founded in 1857 through the collaboration of the Sisters of the Congregation of Notre-Dame, Madame Clara Lloyd Felton, and Father Alfred-Élie Dufresne, as a Catholic school for francophone and anglophone girls. In 1875–76 the school underwent its first expansion, and in 1902 a second expansion added a theatre, the Grande Salle. In 1922 Mont Notre-Dame was designated the provincial house of the Congregation for the Estrie region, triggering major architectural changes; annexes were added in 1926 and 1928, and a gymnasium for girls was opened. In 1969 the elementary boarding school closed, and in 1976 the Notre-Dame Convent became Collège Mont Notre-Dame de Sherbrooke. The project has four committees: Customer Service, Accounting, Production, and Marketing. Mont Notre-Dame earned Fair Trade certification in 2018 for its commitment to ethical purchasing and awareness.

Leadership & Professional

SAGNU (Simulation of the United Nations General Assembly) engages 4th and 5th-year students as delegates for a day, with preparation guided by university students and a teacher. Amnesty International has been active at Mont Notre-Dame since 1987, promoting human rights campaigns and student activism. The school also features Parliament des jeunes (Youth Parliament), Canada Encounters, and a Canadian Youth Forum, which provide hands-on experiences with government and public policy.

Lifestyle & Wellbeing

The athletics program includes volleyball concentration, basketball, flag football, rugby, indoor soccer (futsal), volleyball, and badminton. The school also highlights other disciplines and maintains a Hall of Fame to recognize athletic achievements. A strong emphasis on outdoor activities and wellness complements the sports program. Yoga is offered as a wellness option to support physical and mental wellbeing.

Admissions

Welcome to Mont Notre-Dame. Mont Notre-Dame now offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) program to all students. Explore the Mont with a guided tour and a virtual visit to meet staff and learn more; Open Houses (Portes ouvertes) are available to learn about the school. The Mont is a member of the Association des écoles privées de l'Estrie and the Fédération des établissements d'enseignement privés. These elements help families understand the school's offerings before applying.

To be admitted to first secondary (Grade 7), a candidate must meet the following conditions: submit the final report card from Grade 5; prepare and send a one-minute motivation video; provide the student's intervention plan if applicable; complete the BrissonLegris placement test. For admission to the PEI Languages profile, enrichment and acceleration require following a faster pace and higher expectations: obtain grades indicating that the student exceeds expectations or easily meets them; pass the placement test with above-average results; demonstrate the profile of a motivated, curious student who wants to go further, and demonstrate ease in English (PEI Langues students are classified in enriched English).

In general, admission criteria require the student to be on track in French, English, and mathematics; to submit the motivation video; to take the placement test; and to have good conduct.
