About international schools in Luxembourg

IB international schools in Luxembourg sit inside an unusually multilingual, compact schooling market where families can choose between state-run international tracks and fee-paying private schools that offer the IB curriculum. Instruction in IB schools is commonly delivered in English, French or German, with Luxembourgish taught as a required subject in many settings; some schools offer the full IB continuum (PYP, MYP, DP) while others provide only parts of it. Costs vary sharply: several state international classes are essentially free or charge only small administrative levies, while private IB schools typically charge in the mid-four-figure to low-five-figure range per year and often add one-off enrolment or capital levies. Admissions are best started well before your intended start date - public international places often have waiting lists and private schools commonly use assessments, interviews and deposits - so expect to begin enquiries several months ahead of relocation.

FAQs for Luxembourg

Which IB programmes are commonly available in Luxembourg and what ages do they cover?
Most IB providers in Luxembourg offer one or more of the three main programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP) for early years and primary pupils, the Middle Years Programme (MYP) for lower secondary, and the Diploma Programme (DP) for the final two years of secondary education. Some schools run the full PYP - MYP - DP continuum from about age 3 to 18, while others offer only sections (for example PYP+DP or DP only), so check each school’s authorised programmes and age bands.
What languages of instruction should we expect at IB international schools in Luxembourg?
IB schools in Luxembourg commonly use English, French or German as the primary language of instruction, reflecting the country’s trilingual public system. In addition, Luxembourgish is taught or offered in many schools and most international schools provide substantial additional language support for newcomers to help with integration and progression in multiple languages.
How much do IB international schools cost in Luxembourg?
Fees vary widely: state-run international tracks are generally free or charge only modest administrative/material levies, while private IB schools typically bill annual tuition in a broad band from roughly mid-four-figures up into the low-five-figures. Families should budget separately for likely extras such as one-off enrolment or capital levies, school meals, textbooks, exam fees and extracurricular trips.
When should we apply and what does the admissions process usually involve?
Start your application as early as possible because popular state international classes often have waiting lists and private schools fill places in advance. The usual process includes an online application, review of school records, an entrance assessment or interview (academic and/or language), and payment of a deposit or registration fee to secure a place once offered.
What should relocating parents look for when comparing IB international schools in Luxembourg?
Focus on language provision and how the school supports multilingual learners, whether the school offers the IB stages you need for continuity, and the balance of class sizes and specialist support such as English as an Additional Language or learning-support services. Also check practical matters that affect daily life: published fee policies (including levies and extras), school calendar and transport links, waiting-list practices, and how the school helps with transition and university guidance.
