Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

Origins of the College trace to 1897 from the union of two projects: a group of English-speaking residents in Lomas de Zamora formed the Lomas School Committee to establish a school for their children, and the South Railway (ex-Roca line), built by English firms, created Barker Memorial Hall with an initial gift of 2,000 pounds sterling in honor of Charles Oxtoby Barker, a long-time employee of the company. The school was Barker Memorial School until 1903, Lomas Academy from 1904 to 1914, and Barker College from 1915. The College moved its activities to the Av. Meeks and Mitre site in 1959, and acquired the property for the Secondary School at Av. Meeks and Sixto Fernández in 1970; Barkerfield (the sports field) was purchased in 1981. Barker College has been the Cambridge Official Exam Center since 1936; a member of ESSARP since 1962; and a founding member of the Latin American Heads Conference in 1995. It is also a co-founder of the British Arts Centre, and the Old Barkonian Association has maintained alumni ties since the school's early years.

Community

The Barker Theatre Group (BTG) is a theatre group made up of alumni, teachers and parents that keeps the English-language musical theatre tradition alive. In 2000, BTG was formed to create a space for Barker graduates and community members to collaborate on staging musical productions, and it has evolved in artistic quality and repertoire over the years. The Old Barkonian Association, founded by ten alumni on June 30, 1926, strengthens ties among Barkers' graduates and extends Barker's values to the wider community.
