Carey Baptist Grammar School was founded in 1923 with the support of the Baptist Union of Victoria, initially as a day and boarding school for boys. It is named in honour of Rev. Dr William Carey, a Baptist missionary and language scholar. Its motto, Animo et Fide, means 'By Courage and Faith'. Carey joined the Associated Public Schools (APS) in 1958. In 2023 Carey celebrated its centenary.
Carey is a positive and engaged community made up of students, staff, families, alumni, donors and friends. Lifelong friendships are formed at Carey, and there are broad sporting and interest groups that provide social occasions and support for both parents and students. The school maintains a close alumni network of about 18,000 members with social events, regular reunions and opportunities such as mentoring and career sessions. The Carey Medal recognises exceptional service to the wider community by members of the Carey community.
There are four school section-based Parent Associations: Junior School Parents Association – Kew; Junior School Parents Association – Donvale; Middle School Parents Association; Senior School Parents Association. They coordinate a range of activities and opportunities for families to socialise, network and contribute to the school, and they support classroom representatives and provide a forum for parent feedback. There is also the Carey Past Families Hub for former families to stay connected.
