Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

Located in Toowong, Brisbane, Queensland Academy for Science Mathematics and Technology serves students in Year 7–12. It operates in partnership with the University of Queensland to deliver a leading curriculum in science, mathematics and technology. The relationship emphasizes research, investigation and reflection on local and global matters, supported by intellectual challenge and interdependent enquiry. Graduates have strong university pathways, with 100% receiving a tertiary offer and 75% offered places at the University of Queensland (entering 1st or 2nd year); many graduates also gain places interstate or worldwide. The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme and the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme are part of its curriculum.

Community

QASMT graduates pursue careers across medicine, science, health, engineering, mathematics, law, psychology, education, business and the arts. The SMT Alumni LinkedIn group connects graduates to each other. Outreach programs include STEM Scholars and Young Einsteins to engage younger students in STEM activities; STEM Scholars invites primary schools to nominate high‑achieving students in Years 3–6 for after‑school workshops, with partnership support from Queensland Virtual Academy and other providers, and a National Science Week Celebration Afternoon. The Young Einsteins program provides additional STEM outreach opportunities for younger learners.

Parent-Teacher Association

QASMT runs a formal Parent Engagement Framework that guides partnerships between families and the school to support student wellbeing, personal excellence and academic achievement. The framework rests on four pillars: Engagement; Culture and Wellbeing; Partnership and Voice; and Communication. It includes practical strategies such as Year Level Parent Representatives, transition and orientation programs, learning‑focused events, and communication platforms like Daymap and QParents. The Parent Representative Program appoints 2–3 Year Level Parent Representatives per year level to act as liaisons between the school and the parent body, share information, help build community, and support open communication. Participation is voluntary and privacy is respected; joining is facilitated via a year‑level survey, and interested parents can contact admin@qasmt.eq.edu.au to connect with their year‑level representative.
