Introduction

Lower Austrian International School (LAIS) sits on a single campus at Bimbo-Binder-Promenade 7, 3100 St. Pölten. It operates as an upper secondary public grammar school with a dedicated boarding provision and on-site sports facilities, supporting a combined academic and athletic focus. Established in 2009 as a branch of BORGL and BHASL St. Pölten, LAIS was authorized in 2011 as an official IB World School offering the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. The curriculum blends an Austrian path toward the Matura for German native speakers with the internationally recognized IB Diploma for non-German natives, preparing students for both national and international higher education. The campus integrates a multicultural community of competitive athletes and international students, with the NÖ Sport-Leistungs-Zentrum St.Pölten providing talent intake and intensive training alongside schooling. Short commutes on campus facilitate access to academic, boarding, and sport programs in a single, supportive environment.

Boarding Arrangements

Bundesschülerheim and SLZ am See provide on-campus housing for sport athletes. The Bundesschülerheim houses 192 sportspersons with about 40 caregivers. In addition to accommodation, the Bundesschülerheim provides meals for the athletes. Alongside a large salad buffet, a starter, main course, dessert and fruit are offered. Students are accommodated in modern housing units with internet and TV access. In addition to common rooms with various leisure activities, a gym is available. Older athletes can stay at the SLZ am See, located directly on Ratzersdorfer See and about a five-minute walk from the Bundesschülerheim and the school. When fully occupied, up to 60 athletes can be accommodated at SLZ am See. The arrangement is intended to ease the transition for younger athletes to student housing and to minimize travel times so focus can remain on school and sport.

Fees
Application fees

- EUR 0: There is no general application or tuition charge for enrolment in the Lower Austrian International School (LAIS). LAIS is an upper‑secondary public grammar school; attendance at public secondary schools in Austria is not subject to tuition fees.

Tuition fees (by school year / year group)

- EUR 0 per year for all LAIS year groups: LAIS is a public state school and does not charge annual tuition for any year group.

- IB Diploma assessment fees (where applicable to Diploma candidates): IB assessment fees are charged per candidate and per subject by the International Baccalaureate organization; candidates studying the IB Diploma may incur assessment/subject fees in the final examination sessions (fees are set by the IBO and billed per subject). Example published scales for IB assessment show per‑subject amounts in the 2025/26–2026 timeframe (illustrative per‑subject fee levels appear in IB fee schedules).

Boarding (Bundesschülerheim) fees and breakdown

- Full board (Vollinternat): EUR 472.50 per month, billed 10 times per school year (10×; September–June) — total per school year when fully applied: EUR 4,725.00 (EUR 472.50 × 10).

- Day/half boarding (Halbinternat): EUR 198.00 per month, billed 10 times per school year (10×; September–June) — total per school year when fully applied: EUR 1,980.00 (EUR 198.00 × 10).

- What these boarding charges cover: the boarding contribution includes accommodation in the school dormitory units and full board / catering (meals are provided, typically with salad buffets and multiple courses). The boarding facility provides supervised accommodation, internet/TV in rooms, common rooms and recreational facilities.

Billing schedule and payment terms

- Boarding fees are billed on a 10‑installment schedule across the school year: monthly payments for ten months from September through June (10×).

- IB assessment (exam) fees are billed according to IB/School registration cycles and are payable per examination session; payment timing and deadlines follow IB assessment registration schedules and the school's exam‑registration calendar.

Any other costs or fees

- IB assessment fees: charged per candidate per subject by the IBO (see section above).

- Boarding‑related incidental costs: while the boarding contribution covers accommodation and meals, students and families commonly meet additional personal costs (laundry, personal supplies, optional activities, travel to/from home). The boarding facility operates an internal rules/contract (Aufnahmevertrag) that sets specific inclusions and any further chargeable items.

- Learning‑and‑materials / semester contributions (where charged by some regional boarding/school providers): some Austrian school/boarding providers list semester contributions for learning and working materials; such charges vary by institution and academic programme. (Example regional school internat schedules list a Lern‑ und Arbeitsmittelbeitrag per semester.)

- School trips, examination re‑checks, appeals, replacement diplomas and other by‑request services: these are typically charged separately when applicable (IB and other third‑party services have published fees for appeals, replacement diplomas, transcript requests, etc.).

Refund information

- IB assessment fees: refunds, cancellations and retake rules for IB assessment fees follow the International Baccalaureate's published assessment and examination procedures and refund policies for the relevant examination session.

- Boarding refunds / meal credits / cancellation terms: refund, prorating or crediting of internat fees (for example when a student leaves mid‑term or misses meals) are handled under the boarding home's contract and uptake/registration terms; the boarding home's admission/contract documents set the precise refund and cancellation rules.

Fee payment options

- IB assessment fees: billed and payable according to the school's IB registration process and IB invoicing instructions.

- Boarding fees and other school contributions: standard practice for Austrian school/boarding charges is electronic bank payment (bank transfer / SEPA) as the normal method for institutional invoicing; schools and boarding homes issue the exact invoicing details (bank account/IBAN or other accepted payment methods) on the admission/contract paperwork. Specific accepted payment channels and invoicing details are set out in the boarding home's admission/contract documents.

Admissions

Admissions

1. LAIS offers both the Austrian Matura and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP). LAIS is a branch of BORGL/BHASL St. Pölten, a state-funded Austrian school. In 2011, LAIS was authorized as an official IB World School entitled to offer the IB Diploma Programme. LAIS prepares students for national and international higher education.

2. Admission to the IB Diploma Programme is granted on the condition that a student meets all requirements for progression from grade 10 (6 LAIS) to Grade 11 (7 LAIS), in accordance with Austrian school law. To qualify, students must receive a positive assessment (Genügend or higher) in all subjects taken in Grade 10. The progression is assessed under the LAIS framework and Austrian educational governance.

3. In December of the academic year prior to IB DP Year 1, the Headmaster and the IB Coordinator inform students about the Diploma Programme process in a letter. The letter explains the steps for constructing the Diploma Programme and provides initial guidance. It signals the formal start of DP planning and subject selection timelines.

4. Subject presentations by teachers take place in January and February of the year preceding IB DP Year 1. During these sessions, students receive information about IB subject courses and assessment criteria. The presentations introduce the six subject groups and outline workload and expectations. This information helps students and families begin planning their DP pathway.

5. After the presentations, students and parents consider six subject courses that form the two-year Diploma Programme. LAIS emphasizes balancing intellectual abilities with personal interests in subject choices. It is strongly advised not to select an IB HL course in a subject that is predicted to yield a grade worse than 3 in Grade 10.

6. Subsequently, the student meets the relevant subject teachers to present their choice and request subject approval. The teachers indicate appropriate choices and discuss alternatives if necessary. By signing the subject choice form, teachers do not guarantee successful completion of an IB subject course.

7. Since an IB subject course requires at least five students, alterations to a student's personal choice might be necessary. Adjustments may be made to reflect class size and course viability. LAIS reserves the right to modify subject selections as required to maintain viable DP groups.

8. A student receives ultimate admission to the LAIS IB Diploma Programme after a conference attended by all subject teachers and the IB Coordinator. The decision is based on the individual situation of each student and aligns with Austrian educational governance and LAIS policies.
