The International Programme unites German-speaking learners with children of an international, English-speaking background in a bilingual environment. From ages 10–14, teaching is delivered in both English and German, with English as the main language in the upper levels (ages 15–18). Teaching staff are German- and English-speaking, with some subjects taught by Austrian teachers supported by staff with English as a mother tongue. The programme is suitable for native German speakers seeking additional challenge or native English speakers whose families are resident in or around Salzburg; students must participate in at least one language.
A central pillar of SALIS's plan is student well-being, with enhanced personal development programmes focused on resilience, emotional intelligence, and digital citizenship.
SALIS is the International Programme at Bundesgymnasium Zaunergasse (BGZ) in Salzburg. It is Salzburg's first public international school and operates within BGZ as a state-day-school. SALIS serves about 55 nationalities. Ages 10–14 are taught in English and German, helping international pupils master German while German-speaking children gain English proficiency. From ages 15–18, English is the main language of instruction. The curriculum combines the Australian Curriculum with the International Baccalaureate Diploma, and students can graduate with two diplomas: the Austrian Matura and the IB Diploma. Teaching staff include both German- and English-speaking teachers; some subjects are taught by Austrian teachers with English-speaking support. SALIS ARC provides academic and remedial coaching free of charge. The programme offers a wide range of foreign languages and optional courses such as International Relations, Tai Chi, and Mandarin. The programme is governed by the Verein zur Förderung des bilingualen Unterrichts und der internationalen Klasse am BG Zaunergasse.
