Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

The school traces its beginnings to a small school established in 1955 under the patronage of the British, US and Indian Embassies to educate about eighty children after army schools closed. Rapid growth and differing qualifications required by the North American and the British school systems led to its division in 1959, resulting in the English School and the American International School. The English International School became the nucleus of the new Vienna International School (VIS), run by the non-profit Vienna International School Association, and began preparing candidates for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. By 1981 VIS celebrated its first IB Diploma graduates, and that same year a comprehensive agreement was signed among the Board of Governors, the Republic of Austria and the City of Vienna to ensure stability and development of international education in Vienna. In 1984 VIS moved into its current building on Strasse der Menschenrechte and received recognition from the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education.

Community

VIS hosts almost 1400 students from more than 100 countries, valuing diversity and the opportunity to share different values and traditions from around the world. The school provides the context for parents, teachers and students to come together to foster constructive communication. We aim to be a home away from home for the VIS community.

Parent-Teacher Association

The PTA is a non-profit organization run by parents/guardians, teachers and staff. Monthly PTA meetings are open to everyone and are held to meet and greet, plan and organize fundraising and social events and activities. All members of the community are encouraged to attend and participate in the various clubs and volunteer opportunities. An elected Executive Committee administers the PTA VIS budget and manages activities. The PTA plans and organizes social events and activities that create, cultivate and celebrate a sense of community at VIS, supports school outreach efforts and student-led initiatives, and raises and distributes PTA funds to benefit the students and community. It advocates for our students and families by promoting good communication between parents, teachers, administration and staff.
