The school began in 1996 with the creation of Sociedade Pedagógica Brasil Suíça Ltda, which remains the maintaining company for CIEI. In August 1997, classes started with two students in Jardim I. CIEI was authorized to offer the Primary Years Programme in 2002, and a new building module with a library, science labs, a computer room and an experimental kitchen was inaugurated in 2003. The IB Diploma was authorized in 2006, with the first IB Diploma cohort graduating in 2008; subsequent expansions included new administration facilities in 2014 and six additional classrooms in 2015. By 2019, CIEI served 320 students across 10 classes with 100% IB Diploma approval.
CIEI is located at Estrada do Pontal, 2093, Recreio dos Bandeirantes, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The campus comprises modular buildings that resemble Swiss chalets with air-conditioned classrooms and wide verandas. The outdoor area features playgrounds, a covered sports court, a barbecue area, a synthetic grass field, a sand court, a pool, and a garden with animals such as fish, ponies, a goat, a ram, and a turtle, with a mini wastewater treatment plant to reuse water for irrigation. The refectory/auditorium includes a stage where events and graduations are celebrated.
CIEI is an IB World School in Rio de Janeiro offering the Primary Years Programme and the Diploma Programme for students aged 4 to 18. The school day runs from 8:00 to 16:45 and incorporates learning in Portuguese, English, German, and Spanish, with English-language instruction used for Diploma subjects in the High School. The campus sits on about 10,000 square meters in Recreio dos Bandeirantes, surrounded by nature, and features modular buildings in Swiss chalet style, air conditioned classrooms, and verandas. Facilities include science labs, a computer room, a library, a culinary/experimental kitchen, a dance studio, a judo room, a stage, a pool, and multiple outdoor spaces. CIEI emphasizes inquiry, intercultural understanding, and sustainable attitudes through an integrated schedule that blends academics, sports, and arts. The school is certified as a Cambridge Exam Preparation Centre, and the Exhibition PYP project anchors its inquiry in the final year of primary school.
