Wellbeing and Support

How students are nurtured, understood, and kept safe

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

The school provides a supportive environment with a strong sense of community. Boarding Life fosters social engagement through after‑school activities and weekend outings, with boarding staff encouraging participation in activities, and all boarding students are members of Winnipeg Winter Club with access to tennis, swimming, private music instruction, and performing arts opportunities. The Remote Learning Hub includes an Emotional Well‑Being section with resources for mental health, coping strategies, and guidance for conversations about difficult topics. BH Beginnings emphasizes development across social, academic, emotional, physical, and cultural needs, supporting the whole child. The school's mission to inspire resilience, creativity, and care underpins social‑emotional growth.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

All teachers are language teachers and all students are immersed in language learning from day one. The academic language support program ensures English language learners succeed in academic classes through one‑on‑one, small‑group, and full‑class instruction with experienced academic language teachers; weekend academic language classes for boarders include IELTS test preparation. Balmoral Hall does not require any test scores for English language proficiency, and a multi‑step process determines language supports: an interview with the Executive Director and/or Principal, a Duolingo online assessment, a face‑to‑face assessment with the Academic Language Support team, and a follow‑up placement meeting.

Mental Wellbeing

The Remote Learning Hub includes an Emotional Well‑Being section with mental health resources and coping strategies for families and students, and provides guidance for discussing difficult topics. The hub links to additional wellbeing resources and supports to help navigate challenging times.

Safeguarding

Visitor Services staff are on‑campus 24 hours a day, seven days a week. On‑campus volunteers must attend a volunteer workshop and complete a child abuse registry check.
