International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP), also called GIB (Gemischtsprachiges International Baccalaureate; Multilingual International Baccalaureate), is a rigorous and balanced educational program that addresses intellectual, social, emotional and physical well-being and focuses on developing in students the skills to learn effectively for higher education. The DP has been implemented at the school since 2010 and is recognized by prestigious universities worldwide, which is why it is considered in university admissions. At Colegio Alemán de Concepción, the GIB is taught from the second year of upper secondary through May of the fourth year of upper secondary, the month in which students take the international examinations. In the school, all Diploma Programme students study both their mother tongue, Spanish, and German and English. One of the strengths of the IB Diploma Programme is that it encourages students to become independent learners.
Curriculum of the Diploma Programme: The curriculum is formed by the GIB core and six groups of subjects. The core comprises three components: Theory of Knowledge (TdC), The Extended Essay (Monografía), and Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS). The six groups are: Studies in Language and Literature (Spanish: Literature at DSC); Acquisition of Languages (German and English at DSC); Individuals and Societies (History in German at DSC); Sciences (Biology in German at DSC); Mathematics; Arts. The IB Diploma Programme commits to developing knowledge of concepts and cultures as expressed in other languages, and to teaching those languages. Through this, Theory of Knowledge (TdC) is closely linked to language acquisition. Studying additional languages encourages students to apply what they learn in TdC.
The Diploma is recognized by prestigious universities worldwide and is considered in university admissions, enabling students to pursue study at leading universities around the world.
DSC offers the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in a multilingual format (GIB). The GIB is a rigorous and balanced program that addresses students' intellectual, social, emotional and physical wellbeing and aims to develop their personal, social and ethical growth. All GIB Diploma students study Spanish as their mother tongue, together with German and English. The Diploma Programme includes Theory of Knowledge (TdC), the Monograph, and Creatividad, Actividad y Servicio (CAS), to develop independent learning, intercultural understanding, creativity, physical activity and service to others.
Language Acquisition includes German and English at DSC; English is taught as part of the GIB language acquisition framework.
The GIB program addresses intellectual, social, emotional and physical wellbeing, supporting students' holistic development and ethical growth.
Convivencia Escolar implements a Plan de Gestión de la Convivencia Escolar (PGCE) to promote healthy convivencia among the DSC community and to prevent violence.
1. The school has two admission processes: Ordinary and Extraordinary. Ordinary admission is the main track for Spielgruppe and Prekindergarten and is conducted only if vacancies exist in Kindergarten through IV Medio; if vacancies arise after the Ordinary process, an Extraordinary admission is held, generally the month before the end of the school year.
2. General admission criteria use a scoring model with two components: the applicant's relation to German language and culture, and performance on the admission examination. Applicants must reach the minimum levels defined for their situation to be admitted. For Spielgruppe, the filing date on the online platform also influences prioritization.
3. Ordinary admission to Spielgruppe (Spielgruppe) proceeds with the following sequence: the school publishes the number of Spielgruppe vacancies at the start of the application period. Vacancies are filled according to the published criteria and scoring, including the 10 ranking factors listed (siblings in the school, children of alumni, German-speaking parent, active associates, etc.). Applicants must meet age and documentation requirements to proceed.
4. Requisitos de los postulantes (Spielgruppe) include age: 3 years old by December 31 of the previous calendar year. Documentation required comprises a Birth Certificate and completion of the online Postulation Form available on the school site during the process.
5. Entrevista individual: a family that will have a pupil at the school for the first time is invited to an interview. Attendance by at least one parent or a legal guardian is required. The interview covers developmental stages, parenting styles, and expectations of the school; the date/time is set by the school secretariat once all documents are submitted.
6. Resolución e información sobre los resultados del Proceso de Admisión a Spielgruppe: admissions decisions are based on vacancies, the family's connection to German language/culture, and online postulation date prelación. Accepted families receive an email with a deadline to sign the educational services contract and pay the enrollment fee for the next school year. If the child is not enrolled within that deadline, the family is deemed to have forfeited the seat and the vacancy becomes available.
7. Proceso de Admisión Ordinario para Prekinder: All students currently in Spielgruppe must apply to Prekindergarten and take the Prekindergarten Admission Exam; moving to Prekinder is not automatic.
8. Número de vacantes para Pre Kindergarten: The school will publish the number of Prekindergarten vacancies at the start of the application period.
9. Criterios de admisif3n a Pre Kinder: The admission criteria for Prekindergarten include the same weighting as Spielgruppe, with priority given according to the ranking that results from the sum of the exam score and the affiliation with the German language and culture. Vacancies are filled based on the ranking until they are exhausted.
10. Requisitos Postulantes (Prekindergarten): 4 years old by March 31 of the relevant school year.
11. Documentación a presentar (Prekindergarten): Birth Certificate and the Postulation Form completed online and submitted in paper, signed by both parents, with all required documentation within the schedule.
12. Entrevista individual (sólo para familias nuevas en el colegio) para Prekindergarten: An interview with new families is required as part of the process.
13. Sobre el exámen de admisión a Prekindergarten: The preschool admission standards align with current curricular bases. All Prekindergarten applicants participate in two observation days where they engage in games and activities that assess three developmental areas: Personal and Social Development, Comprehensive Communication, and Interaction/Understanding of the Environment. The language observation is given special consideration.
14. Calificación y resultados para Prekindergarten: The standards for the preschool cycle are complemented by the two observation days and the admission exam, with the final ranking combining exam results and language/culture affinity to determine admission. Accepted families are notified by email and must complete the enrollment steps within the stipulated timeframe.
15. If a family does not enroll within the deadline, the vacancy is considered available for other applicants.
DSC Motivationsstipendium: a Germany-study-and-work scholarship is offered, with up to three scholarships per year. It provides a restricted-transaction account for visa purposes, a monthly stipend of 400 euros for twelve months, visa guidance, and ongoing support in Germany. Eligibility includes having completed the GIB diploma and meeting other criteria such as social commitment and a motivation letter; obligations include meeting study requirements and, if possible, visiting the DSC during the scholarship period.
Fomento estudiantil: the school, via its collaboration with the Wilhelm von Humboldt Institute (LBI), offers two scholarship streams: Beca “Profesores Crean Futuro” and Beca Crédito Social. Requirements and details are published in the 2016 LBI Fomento Estudiantil program document.
If vacancies exist after the Ordinary admissions, an Extraordinary admission process is convened, typically in the month before the end of the school year, to fill remaining spots.
