German settlers began arriving in Puerto Montt in November 1852 seeking education for their children. Manuel Montt Torres, then President of Chile, decreed in June 1853 the creation of a school for immigrant children, with Federico Geisse Hass serving as preceptor. As the community grew, the Geisse school closed and education was provided through itinerant schooling to the German-speaking population across the Llanquihue Colony. By 1860 the German presence led to the creation of institutions such as the Deutscher Verein (1860) and the Lutheran Church (1863). In October 1869 the Colegio Alemán de Puerto Montt was founded with support from the Deutscher Club and leaders such as Conrado Sprenger; classes began on a Benavente Street property, and in 1969 the centenary relocation moved to the current Bernardo Philippi campus.
The school community marks its long history with anniversary events; the 156th anniversary ceremony was attended by the Honorary Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany in Puerto Montt. The school maintains a Parents Center (Elternverband / Centro de Padres), with the 2025–2027 leadership listed. Contact details include direccion@ialeman.cl and Bernardo Phillippi
