Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

The Abraham Lincoln Bilingual School was founded in July 1955 by Rafael and Charlotte Samper Alum, and Charlotte's mother, Eleonor F. Henderson, who served as its first rector (1955–1961). Its first campus was a house at the southwest corner of Calle 77 with Carrera 7; in 1956 it moved to two large houses on Carrera 7 with Calle 78 named Montiel and Estambul. It currently has three campuses: Preschool in the San José de Bavaria neighborhood, and Primary and Bachillerato on Calle 170. The school adopted the name Abraham Lincoln as a symbol of values including inclusion and recognition of human dignity, reflecting leadership for freedom and a diverse humanity. From the beginning, the Samper Alum family envisioned a philosophy that could adapt to change: close to diverse cultures, with multilingual education, and an ecumenical approach. The school began operating as a corporation in 1963, when a group of parents established the Abraham Lincoln Corporation, owned by the school and composed of all parent families. The institution pursued ISO 9001 Quality Management certification, achieving it in 2008 to reinforce a culture of continuous improvement. Since its founding, the school has remained open and has reported achievement in state exams, external language assessments, and International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma results.

Community

The school views families as a fundamental part of the development of its students, with the family serving as the natural context for cognitive, social, and affective learning and for the formation of citizenship and active rights and duties. It is believed that success comes from uniting efforts to support learners, and the school seeks to strengthen the school–family relationship through spaces for dialogue, reflection, and concrete actions on topics such as prevention and mitigation of school violence, promotion of rights and healthy lifestyles, and formation for affectivity and life skills. These efforts materialize in School of Parents sessions held periodically during the school year; the site also provides content on these topics tailored to each campus.

Parent-Teacher Association

The school has ASOLINCOLN, the Asociación de Padres de Familia del Colegio Bilingüe Abraham Lincoln, whose motto is “Juntos lo hacemos mejor.” ASOLINCOLN works for the well‑being of our children and families through various projects focused on community welfare, including Family Day with discounted rates for members, activities for children at all three campuses, and collaboration with insurers to offer a life‑insurance policy at no cost for one parent and the option to insure the second parent at a preferred rate. Membership is annual per family, with enrollment possible via the school's matriculation platform, and payment options including online PSE or bank transfers. The association also provides discounts with suppliers for uniforms and school materials and maintains special collaboration agreements with partners in arts, sports, life insurance, gym memberships, baking courses, and other items. For more information, contact asolincoln@als.edu.co or WhatsApp 3112235308.
