iDSP traces its origins to 1958, when the Association of the German-language School in Paris was formed with support from the German Foreign Office, the German Embassy in Paris, and other partners. The first class began on November 3, 1958, in three rooms at the YMCA near the Trocadéro, with seven students; by year's end there were 28. The school moved to Neuilly in 1959; the primary opened in 1960-61 and a kindergarten was added in 1962, while a nine-class secondary was completed in 1965-66. From 1968-1970 the school relocated during expansion, and by 1970 it accommodated around 600 students; in 1975-1981 the parents founded the Amis de l'école and class councils formed, with enrollment reaching 941 in 1977-78. The main mission remains to provide German-speaking children with instruction in German up to the Abitur, and since the 1990s facilities have been modernized and a bilingual curriculum introduced in 1994, with the EMFA German-French music school opening in 1998-99.
iDSP fosters a vibrant school community through its extracurricular offerings and school life. Extracurricular activities are coordinated by associations such as the Amicale de l'iDSP and the school music program, and events like the Oktoberfest bring families together. The Amicale de l'iDSP, a public-benefit association founded in the 1970s, supports the kindergarten and school through member contributions, seeking financial support, and organizing Paris and museum visits to help newly arrived families integrate; its funds finance major acquisitions, student projects, cultural events, and other activities. The Amicale welcomes new members and invites you to join to support projects and enjoy the school's social life.
The Association of the German International School of Paris is the governing body of the school and the employer of teaching and administrative staff. Its board is elected by all members at general assemblies for a three-year term. The board's prerogatives extend from budgeting and investments to construction projects, recruitment of local staff, and medium-term strategic decisions, and its members serve on a voluntary basis for the school's welfare. The board works closely with the school's pedagogical and administrative leadership. As parents, you are automatically members and are invited to attend the general assemblies in October and June. The statutes of the association are published, and the current board includes: Jan Rieländer (President), Regina Susterac (Vice-President), Markus Hempel, Maureen Rieländer, Roland de Moustier, Anja Bothe, Irina Ort, Guillaume Rade.
