Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

The International School of Toulouse opened in September 1999 for pupils aged 4 to 18 seeking an education in English, built to support the global mobility of the local aircraft industry. It has been an IB World School since January 2000, offering the IB Diploma Programme. It gained full accreditation from the Council of International Schools and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges in June 2011. In 2001 a 3,700 square metre facility with primary and secondary wings was built and land was expanded by a hectare, with three additional prefabricated buildings added to house classrooms. In 2009 a new facility for IST Primary School and the Deutsche Schule Toulouse was inaugurated, including a canteen and a large sports hall, after which the original IST building became the Secondary School.

Community

The International School of Toulouse has developed strong links with the local area and population. Regular visits to Toulouse for students at all levels help them gain a firm understanding of the language, history and culture of this part of France. The School also organises residential trips to other parts of France and to Europe to enrich learning experiences. The visual and performing arts have a prominent place, with public displays of work and numerous concerts and plays, and distinguished writers, artists and musicians have visited to work with students.

Parent-Teacher Association

Friends of IST is the IST Parent Association. Upon joining the IST community, all parents become members of Friends of IST. The association raises funds and organises social and cultural events for students and parents. The IST Parent Delegates provide a structure for ongoing, consistent and open communication between parents and the school, representing the views of the parents in their respective grades to the Head of Primary or Secondary and to the School Governors. Usually there are two Parent Delegates per grade in both Primary and Secondary Schools; they meet the Head of Primary/Secondary each half term and meet the School Governors twice per year. The spirit of cooperation, mutual respect and working together for the benefit of all IST children is essential for the success of the organisation.

The International School of Toulouse is located on a four-hectare site in Colomiers and serves students aged 3 to 18. The school offers the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP) and Diploma Programme (DP), along with the Cambridge IGCSE for Grades 9–10. IST's IB World School status dates back to 2000. Classes are small to support close teacher interaction and individualized learning. For younger students, the curriculum provides inquiry-led learning in English with strong French language support to facilitate integration into the local culture. The campus features two libraries, science laboratories, and dedicated spaces for art, music, drama and design & technology, plus assembly halls and an auditorium. On-site facilities include a large gym, all-weather football pitch, running track and long jump area, a canteen serving hot meals, and high-speed Wi-Fi. Extracurriculars span music ensembles, drama, creative writing, science, mathematics and art, with regular concerts, theatre productions, and cultural events.
