Wellbeing and Support

How students are nurtured, understood, and kept safe

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

ISHR has counsellors who work closely with teachers and parents to support students. Students may approach counsellors during the school day or contact them to make an appointment. Counselling provides a non-judgmental, caring environment to help students work through concerns. Counselling also offers preventative programs to address school-wide needs across the sections.

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

Learning Enrichment (LE) provides targeted support for students with mild learning needs. Three LE teachers work with teachers, counselors, and parents to ensure academic needs are supported. The program offers consultation, evaluations, observations, in-class support, and small-group instruction. Students enter LE through referrals from a previous school, an IEP, or a teacher referral. Progress is reviewed regularly to ensure the level of support remains appropriate.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

The school assesses language capabilities and, where necessary, teachers and EAL specialists collaborate to formulate a plan for student success. WIDA MODEL is used annually to track English language proficiency from Grade 1 upwards, alongside classroom observation and teacher collaboration across the school. When proficiency is reached, students exit the program and are typically monitored for a year. EAL support is provided in the Early Years, Primary School, and Secondary School, with small-group instruction and sometimes 1:1 sessions, and the EAL team collaborates with homeroom teachers to support learning.

Mental Wellbeing

ISHR provides mental wellbeing support through counselling services. Two counsellors work with students in a listening, confidential environment and collaborate with teachers and parents to support individual needs. The counselling provided is short-term and not licensed psychological therapy; longer-term support may be referred to external services as needed. Students can access counselling during the school day or by appointment, and what is shared remains confidential except where safety concerns require disclosure.

Safeguarding

The school has a Child Safeguarding and Protection Policy based on international law and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. ISHR fosters a culture of transparency and speaking out against unsafe practices; safeguarding is everyone's responsibility, with staff, volunteers and visitors expected to uphold this. The school provides annual age-appropriate safeguarding lessons for all grades, as well as staff and parent training, and parent information sessions.
