Munich International School was founded in 1966 as one of the earliest international schools. It is an independent, non-profit IB World School authorised by the International Baccalaureate since 1980. The school sits on a 55-acre campus at Schloss Buchhof in Starnberg, near the Bavarian Lake District. On September 19, 1966, MIS opened its doors for the first time to 120 students in Reception through 8.
MIS has a vibrant, collaborative community with seasonal activities, performances, and tournaments, plus regular Parent-Principal Forums and PTV coffee mornings. Alumni & Friends and Giving are part of the MIS community infrastructure, expanding opportunities for engagement. The MIS community emphasizes ongoing involvement of students, parents, staff, and alumni.
The Parent Teacher Verein (PTV) is the parent organization at MIS. ‘Verein' is the German word for association. It is a non-profit, volunteer-led association of parents that supports the school community by building connections among parents and with the school. The PTV has goals to create a thriving parent community, improve our children's lives at school, host school-wide events, organize fundraising activities, and liaise with the school management. The PTV runs more than 40 different community groups organized by nationality, grade, and area, as well as social clubs; New Family Workshops; and a New Family Buddy Program to help families settle in. It hosts welcome coffee mornings at the start of the school year and an annual Staff Appreciation Lunch, and coordinates community events such as Frühlingsfest. Becoming a member supports everything the PTV does throughout the year.
