The school was launched as a joint project of UWC Germany and the Robert Bosch Stiftung to mark the 150th anniversary of Robert Bosch's birth. The school opened its doors in September 2014. The former Carthusian monastery in Freiburg was restored and converted into a school by the end of 2014. The Robert Bosch Stiftung and the Robert Bosch GmbH provided 45 million euros for this purpose. The school bears the name of Robert Bosch and is part of the United World Colleges movement.
The school hosts a charity concert series, Kultur in der Kartause, where local and international artists perform in the historic monastery. The proceeds support scholarships for students or other social projects at RBC.
