Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

The Japanese International School (English Section) was established in 1997 alongside the Japanese Section to serve Hong Kong’s international and Japanese communities. The school operates as a non-profit institution managed by a School Management Committee representing both sections. It became an IB World School in 2007, authorised to deliver the Primary Years Programme (PYP). In 2009, the school collaborated in founding International College Hong Kong (ICHK) to provide a seamless through-train education up to secondary level. Over the years, JIS has expanded its facilities and maintained its role as a small, community-focused international primary school in Hong Kong.

Community

The school fosters an inclusive and active community involving students, staff, and families. Events such as Sports Day, the Swimming Gala, House Days, and school camps bring students together across year levels. Cultural and service activities are built into the curriculum, encouraging global awareness and teamwork. Regular assemblies, concerts, and class exhibitions allow students to share their learning with the wider community.

Parent-Teacher Association

The English Section Staff and Parent Association (ESSPA) acts as the parent–teacher organisation for the English Section. ESSPA organises social events, fundraising initiatives, and community projects throughout the year to support school life and strengthen family involvement. Funds raised are used for equipment purchases, facility improvements, and educational events. The group meets regularly and collaborates with the Japanese Section’s PTA for joint community occasions. Parents are encouraged to volunteer, attend meetings, and take part in school celebrations such as fairs and charity events. ESSPA contact information and annual calendars are published in the Parents Zone section of the school website.
