BIS opened its doors in 1972 in a converted house in Ciumbuleuit. The school is a non-profit organization governed by a dedicated group of parent volunteers guided by the school's Mission, Vision, and Values. Today, BIS is in its 52nd year serving expatriate and local families in Bandung and educates nearly 200 students on a 1.2-hectare campus just north of the city center. It is the only IB Continuum school in Bandung, offering programmes that are relevant and rigorous with a holistic approach to education that supports students' academic, social, emotional, and spiritual development.
FoBIS (Friends of BIS) is a non-profit group that supports the BIS community and helps organize parental involvement in school life. FoBIS is the glue that holds the BIS community of families together. FoBIS runs activities and events such as a Welcome Back BBQ, Halloween Party, Unity In Diversity, Winter Bazaar, and Teacher Appreciation Day. It also coordinates social projects, fundraising, and opportunities to read in class, share professional expertise, or lead student activities, and it partners with business leaders and parents to provide educational field trips and leadership workshops.

It is a non-profit organization focused on increasing parental involvement through social projects, community-building events, and fundraising. Bandung Independent School (BIS) is an International Baccalaureate continuum school for learners aged 2 to 18, offering the Primary Years Programme, Middle Years Programme and Diploma Programme. Located on a 1.2‑hectare campus just north of Bandung's city center, BIS serves expatriate and local families and educates nearly 200 students. The school is operated by Yayasan Komunitas Belajar Internasional Bandung as a non‑profit, guided by a mission, vision and values developed with involvement from parent volunteers. BIS is the only IB Continuum school in Bandung. The Primary Years Programme is provided in Elementary with daily English and Mathematics and a focus on developing international-mindedness; the MYP was authorized in 2022. The Diploma Programme includes Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity and Service. Facilities include a Performing Arts Center with a theatre, a 160‑seat English‑language library—the largest in Bandung—and spaces for Maker, culinary learning and science; plus outdoor play areas, sport facilities and science labs to support inquiry and hands‑on learning.
