Opened on September 1, 1951 as the International School of Djakarta with three teaching staff and eight children in a home garage. It grew from that humble beginning as demand increased and space was expanded. In 1965 it became the Joint Embassy School (JES), and by the late 1960s a full High School program was under consideration. In 2015 the school was renamed Jakarta Intercultural School. Today, JIS operates on three campuses with over 2,500 students and more than 100 teachers and staff from over 70 nationalities.
JIS describes its community as lively, vibrant, and fun, with PTA celebrations, student-led TED Talks and talent shows. The Dragon community includes families, teachers, and staff from over 70 nationalities. Alumni networks are active, with alumni reunions. JIS Peduli, established in 2004, mobilizes relief and service projects.
The PTA has the largest membership among JIS volunteer organizations, and its members include JIS parents/guardians and faculty who are automatically members. PTA volunteers organize family events, bazaars, and teachers' appreciation while raising funds for academic, service, and other projects. The PTA aims to promote active partnership between parents, teachers and administrators to enhance the JIS experience and Dragon Nation pride. The Dragon Store is run by PTA volunteers and supports student activities and school spirit. Parent Welcome assists new families by hosting gatherings and excursions to help them settle into JIS and Jakarta.
