Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

Jakarta Montessori School has been educating children for more than 30 years, since its inception on 5 October 1986. It follows authentic Montessori practices and defines its institutional identity around Montessori principles, enduring values and educational outcomes. The school is fully accredited by the Montessori Evaluation and Accreditation Board, London, and holds accreditation for Toddlers through Lower Secondary from Badan Akreditasi Nasional Indonesia. It is affiliated with the International Montessori Council in the USA and works closely with The Montessori Foundation and their Lab School – NewGate Montessori IB School. All lead teachers hold International Montessori Diplomas.

Community

Alumni Speak highlights JMS as a second home where teachers are caring and classmates learn from and support one another. Parents testify that JMS fosters independence, responsibility, respect and confidence, with a Montessori approach that encourages students to interact and learn through experience. Community-building events include the United Nations Day Celebration, the Family Sports Day, and the Classroom and Community Meeting, and the school also hosts an annual concert. Every semester, Jakarta Montessori School runs Parents Visitation Weeks and offers Parent/Family Education Programs, while strong parent–teacher communication is encouraged and conferences occur in December and June.

Jakarta Montessori School provides a genuine Montessori experience for children aged 1 to 18 in Indonesia. The main teaching language is English, with Bahasa Indonesia taught to all students; in Pre-school this is informal, in Primary it follows the Indonesian curriculum, and in Upper Primary additional Indonesian lessons prepare students for optional national exams. Core subjects are taught with Montessori materials, building concrete understanding in mathematics, language, science, geography and research skills. Science is integrated across the curriculum, covering biology, geology, astronomy and archaeology, while students regularly use the library and Internet for projects. The campus is spacious and purpose-built, with dedicated facilities for Preschool, Toddlers, Lower Primary, Upper Primary and Secondary, plus a large farm area for hands-on learning. After-school enrichment, field trips and community projects supplement learning. Notable facilities include a science laboratory, art studio, library, computer lab and sports spaces such as a basketball court and futsal.
