Medan Independent School is governed by the Medan International School Foundation (Yayasan Medan International School). The Foundation has full authority to operate a school under the control and responsibility of the MIS Board of Directors, whose ultimate responsibility is to the parents whose children attend the school. In 2014 the school changed its name to Medan Independent School under the same foundation.
Medan Independent School is a private day international school in Medan that educates students from ages 3 to 17. The school delivers an International Baccalaureate Continuum program—PYP, MYP and DP—integrated with an American curriculum aligned to US standards (AERO, NGSS, Common Core, ISTE) and taught within the IB framework. English is the language of instruction, with a focus on inquiry-based, student-centered learning within an IB context. Medan Independent School positions itself as the only IB Continuum School in Sumatra, reflecting its commitment to continuity across primary through pre-university education. The school traces its roots to a foundation serving expatriate families, gaining governance by a board of directors in 1976, moving to a purpose-built campus funded by Mobil Oil in 1981-82, and achieving DP authorization in 2017 with the first DP graduates in 2018-2019. About 60% of students are Indonesian, 3% have dual citizenship, and 37% are international, providing global opportunities.
