Medan International School began as a school serving expatriate families in Medan. In 1976 the MIS Foundation gained full authority to operate the school under a Board of Directors responsible to the parents. In 1981-1982 MIS moved to a purpose-built campus funded by Mobil Oil, Inc., and enrollment grew. In 2002 MIS was authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme, and in 2003 the Primary Years Programme followed. In 2014, following regulatory changes in Indonesia, the school changed its name to Medan Independent School under the same Yayasan. In 2017 MIS was authorized to offer the Diploma Programme, and the 2018-2019 school year marked the first graduating Diploma Programme cohort. Now about 60% Indonesian students, 3% dual citizenship, and around 37% international students.
The MIS community is supported by the MIS Parent Teacher Association (PTA), a team of parents and staff who support our school community. All parents are automatically members and are invited to join us by volunteering some time to support MIS programs. We have regular Parent Coffee Mornings with the Principal to keep parents informed and to gather feedback, and we have an Annual General Meeting to discuss finances, development plans, and student achievements. PTA involvement includes volunteering during events such as the Athletics Carnival, International Day, Indofest, and Awards Night.
