NJIS was established in 1990 as the North Jakarta International School by Larry Bally and was the first international school in Kelapa Gading. The school was established as a Yayasan, a not-for-profit social foundation. In 2010, NJIS was amalgamated by Agung Podomoro Group and continues as an independent, non-profit day school for Preschool through Grade 12. The name was changed from North Jakarta International School to North Jakarta Intercultural School, and the Indonesian Ministry of Education accepted the new name on November 17, 2014. NJIS is an IB World School and is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and is a member of the East Asia Regional Council of Schools (EARCOS).
