Social skills development is integrated into the learning framework. The school focuses on developing positive interpersonal relationships and collaboration, which require self-control, resilience, and peer support. Approaches to Learning include social and self-management skills to support student well-being and learning. NJIS uses a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) to address socio-emotional growth with universal, targeted, and intensive interventions guided by data. For students needing additional support, the MTSS/Student Support Team coordinates with learning specialists and counselors as needed. Mental health days are part of the well-being priorities.
The school maintains a Whole School Inclusion Policy. A MTSS/Student Support Team identifies learning and socio-emotional needs early and provides universal, targeted, and intensive supports. An Individualized Intervention Plan (IIP) may be developed for Tier 3, with learning support specialists involved. Supports are delivered through one-on-one or small-group instruction. The framework emphasizes removing barriers to learning and supporting diverse learners.
NJIS supports multilingual communication and language development. Communicator is a key part of the IB learner profile, enabling students to express ideas confidently in more than one language. The school operates under a Whole School Language Policy.
Mental health and well-being are an important priority. NJIS Students can request one mental health day per semester without questions. The day is arranged through the Learning Management System (Toddle) and may include scheduling with the school counselor upon return.
The NJIS Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy exists. NJIS conducts a volunteer screening program to ensure student safety, including volunteer applications, confidentiality and safeguarding signatures, and police background checks; some roles require Child Protection Training. Adults on campus are subject to safeguarding procedures and related guidelines.
