Cikal is a community of lifelong learners that partners with families to empower children to be successful beyond schooling, where children can learn, play, and grow in a safe and joyful environment. It is led by Yayasan Cinta Keluarga in collaboration with PT Sekolah Cikal and was founded in 1999 by Najelaa Shihab and Dewi Soeharto. Celebrating 25 years, Cikal remains committed to fulfilling every learning need of students and to personalizing learning through the 5Cs and the 5 Stars Competencies. Learning is organized across nine phases from Preschool to Secondary School, with a personalized, digitally integrated curriculum that supports the 5 Stars Competencies.
Known as the Community of Lifelong Learners, Cikal established and collaborates with diverse educational and learning communities across Indonesia for parents, students, and teachers. Its networks include Yayasan Guru Belajar, Kampus Pemimpin Merdeka, Guru Belajar.org, Kampus Guru Cikal, and Teach First Indonesia. The vision is to be a community of lifelong learners making a difference by developing the 5 Stars Competencies, with a mission to establish stability in students, cultivate skilled and independent learners, build physically sound learners, and empower a global, sustainable, and peaceful society.
Sekolah Cikal Surabaya is an IB World School for ages 0 to 18, offering the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and Middle/High School programmes, alongside Cambridge IGCSE and Cambridge A Levels within a bespoke curriculum. The school serves Reception through Year 12, with a PYP that covers Mathematics, English and Indonesian Acquisition and Literature, Science, Social Studies, Religion Studies, Physical Health Education, The Arts, Personal Social Education, and the PYP Exhibition. The Cikal 5 Stars Competencies and the 5 Cs—Compassionate Connection, Comprehensive Concept, Constructive Continuity, Challenging Choices, and Community Context—shape a project-based, globally minded learning approach. Learning is designed to integrate IB, Cambridge, and the Indonesian National Curriculum to enable flexible content and inquiry. Facilities include a Basket Hall, Swimming Pool, laboratories, libraries, and spaces for Visual Art, Studio Design, and music, with a Cikal Surabaya Hall and an Outdoor Playground. Cikal Aksi-Aksi and community service are central to student projects.
