SIS was founded in 1995 by Jakarta business leaders seeking a Singaporean-flavored international school to serve expatriate families. Early meetings with the Singapore Ambassador to Indonesia, H.E. Edward Lee, and with H.E. the Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore helped spark the project. A collaboration with Raffles Institution led to appointing Mr. Magendiran of Raffles as the first Singapore International School principal in 1997. SIS began in a small, modest site in North Jakarta, but the 1998 Asian financial crisis reduced enrollment and sponsorship, prompting a move south to where expatriate communities were located. A permanent Bona Vista campus in South Jakarta opened in January 2002 with larger classrooms and better facilities, and SIS expanded to campuses across Indonesia offering Singapore, Cambridge, and IB curricula.
