ISL uses English as the language of instruction for most subjects. French is taught as an additional language in Grades 6–10; most students also study German (Grades 6–10) or Spanish (Grades 6–7). In Grades 6–8, students study two languages in addition to English, and in Grade 10 they choose which languages to continue as part of the IB programme. All other classes are taught in English, with Modern Language courses such as French and German exceptions.
English as an Additional Language (EAL) supports non-native speakers to gain competence in English and integrate into the school community. Beginner EAL students spend part of each day in dedicated classes, while also joining the regular classroom to interact with peers. Multilingual students are immersed in academic English language development and content-area learning, with most subjects taught in English.
