Mutiara International Grammar School teaches British Curriculum, Cambridge (Primary), Cambridge (Secondary), Cambridge IGCSE, EYFS (Early years foundation stage) for students aged 3 to 16.
MIGS offers a curriculum based on the Cambridge Assessment International Education pathway for students from ages 3 to 18. The Early Years section (Nursery and Reception) follows the UK's Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, which is a play-based program incorporating elements from Reggio Emilia and Montessori approaches. In the Junior School (Years 1-6), students study the Cambridge Primary curriculum, covering core subjects like English, Mathematics, and Science, alongside a broad range of other subjects including humanities, arts, and languages like Mandarin. The Senior School is divided into Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9) and Key Stage 4 (Years 10-11). In Key Stage 4, students undertake a two-year International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) course, culminating in examinations from Cambridge International Examinations (CIE). Core IGCSE subjects include English and Mathematics, with a wide range of optional subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Business Studies, Accounting, ICT, and Art and Design.
The school supports students' social and emotional development through a variety of means. In the Early Years, personal, social and emotional development is a key area of the curriculum, where children learn to form relationships, interact with confidence and express their feelings. The school also has a pastoral care system and offers a Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) program. These initiatives aim to help students develop into responsible individuals and respected members of their communities. The school's focus on a friendly and familial atmosphere also contributes to students' well-being.
MIGS can cater for students with mild Special Educational Needs (SEN). It is not a specialist SEN institution, and its resources are limited in this area. Parents of children with SEN are required to provide a report from a specialist so the school can determine if it has the internal resources to support the student's needs. The school will then assess the student to ensure they can be appropriately placed.
The school has an English as an Additional Language (EAL) program for students who need support with their English proficiency. This program is offered at no additional cost. Students are assessed and then placed in beginner, intermediate, or advanced groups for support. This support is provided through either pull-out sessions, where students receive targeted instruction, or in-class support for those who need it most. The aim is to help students adapt to the English-medium learning environment and succeed academically.
The school has a counseling service as part of its approach to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of students. This service addresses issues like anxiety, mood disorders, and academic challenges. For younger students, a therapeutic approach including art and play therapy is used, while older students can have individual or small group sessions. There is a "walk-in" facility for short, unscheduled sessions, and referrals can also be made by teachers or parents. The school can also refer students to external mental health providers if needed.
MIGS has a number of policies and procedures in place to ensure the safety and security of its students. All visitors must register and be verified at the guardhouse before entering the school grounds. Students are not permitted to leave the school grounds during school hours without approval from the Head of School. The school also has a supervised waiting area for students who are picked up late. Regular fire and other safety drills are conducted, and the entire school is a designated smoke-free zone.
Visit the school. You can make an appointment with the admissions team to tour the school grounds and facilities. This is a good opportunity to see the learning spaces and get a feel for the school environment.
Submit an application. After your visit, you will need to complete an application form and submit it along with the required documents. These include copies of your child's and your own identity documents, previous school reports, and passport-sized photos. A non-refundable application fee is required at this stage.
Entrance Test. Your child will need to take an entrance test to assess their learning skills and language proficiency. The type of test depends on the year group: Reception applicants undergo a two-day in-class observation, while older students take written or online tests (CAT4 and NGRT).
Interview. Based on the test results, you and your child will be invited for an interview with the relevant Head of School. This is a chance for the school to learn more about your child and for you to ask any remaining questions. Following the interview, the school will inform you if a place can be offered.
MIGS offers a limited number of academic scholarships for both new and existing students in Years 9, 10, and 11. These scholarships provide a 25% discount on tuition fees and are awarded based on high academic achievement, English fluency, active participation in co-curricular activities, and leadership potential. The scholarships are reviewed annually and are dependent on the student maintaining their academic performance and conduct. The application process typically involves submitting an application form, academic transcripts, letters of recommendation, and a CV.
The school does not operate a formal waitlist system. Applications are accepted throughout the year, but places are limited in each class and year group.
