Wellbeing and Support

How students are nurtured, understood, and kept safe

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

SJIIM integrates aspects of wellbeing and safety into its PSHE (Personal, Social, Health Education), Character and Wellbeing classes, assemblies, and tutor time. These cover self-esteem, mental health, physical health, risk management, online safety, and relationship education. Staff are trained to recognise changes in behaviour as possible indicators of distress and to respond appropriately. SEL is therefore embedded across the curriculum rather than being a stand-alone programme.

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

The school does not publicly disclose information regarding SEN support.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

SJIIM has a dedicated EAL team in the Elementary School, including an EAL Leader and specialist teachers. Their role is to assess language proficiency, provide immersion lessons, and support students’ progress in English across the curriculum.

Mental Wellbeing

Mental health and wellbeing are addressed through pastoral care, PSHE/Character and Wellbeing lessons, assemblies, and tutor sessions. Staff are trained to recognise signs of mental ill health and self-harm, and to respond appropriately. Students also have access to in-school counselling in certain safeguarding cases, with referrals possible for external professional counselling.

Safeguarding

SJIIM operates a comprehensive Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy. The Head of School, Gary Cairns, is the Lead Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), supported by deputies across Elementary, High School, and Early Years. All staff receive mandatory safeguarding training, and new staff are trained during induction. The school uses CPOMS in iSAMS to log and monitor concerns, and has an anonymous reporting system for students, parents, and staff. Policies are aligned with Malaysian child protection laws and international guidance such as Keeping Children Safe in Education 2024.

St. Joseph’s Institution International School Malaysia (SJIIM) is a Lasallian international school in Tropicana, Petaling Jaya, established in 2016. The school provides a full pathway beginning with the UK Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), moving through the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) and Cambridge IGCSE, and culminating in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). Its community includes students of more than 30 nationalities, with English as the language of instruction. Mandarin is taught daily in the Primary years, and Spanish is introduced in Secondary. The campus houses specialist facilities for science, sports, and the performing arts, alongside flexible learning spaces. A defining aspect of SJIIM is its commitment to service learning, grounded in Lasallian values, which gives students opportunities to engage in projects that support local and global communities.
