RAS was founded in 1962 to provide elementary education for children of American Embassy families in Rabat. It began in a large house and later expanded to include Kindergarten through Grade 8 as enrollment grew. The late US Ambassador Henry J. Tasca, with support from King Hassan II and Moroccan authorities, helped relocate the school and expand to the Agdal campus. In January 2019, RAS relocated to a waterfront Rabat corniche campus with nine buildings and modern facilities, including science labs, a STEAM Lab, Visual Arts classrooms, a 300-seat performing arts center, a learning commons, a cafeteria, a gym, and an indoor pool; outdoor facilities include basketball courts, a soccer field, and a track. The school has been accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools since 1985 and offers the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program since 1992.
RAS cherishes a diverse community of American, international, and Moroccan families and fosters strong connections among them. The school's community life is supported by the PTA, Parents, Alumni, and Faculty & Staff. PTA events bring the community together through Coffee Mornings, Intro to Rabat tours for new families, a Welcome Back Fall Picnic, Culture Day, and a Book Fair. RAS's Parent Teacher Association (PTA) welcomes all parents and prospective members to participate in an engaged, collaborative partnership with the school. The PTA aims to build a stronger community, increase membership, and improve communications, with many volunteering tasks that can be done from home. The PTA Executive Committee includes Alba Muñoz as PTA President, along with a Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary, and interested members can email pta@ras.ma.
