The idea of a school in Ikeja grew from May 1957 when a group of interested parents applied to the West African Airways Corporation for permission to rent a building for a school. The group formed Grange Education Limited as a not-for-profit company based in GRA, Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria, called Grange School. It was officially opened by Lady Robertson, wife of the Governor-General of Nigeria, on 15 December 1958. In the 1990s there was pressure to expand the primary curriculum to the British General Certificate of Education, which led to establishing a secondary section as a co-ed day school in September 1998. A residential boarding provision was established in 2006, and in 2013 the ethos became “British tradition with Nigerian innovation,” with COBIS membership granted in early 2014 and the school's not-for-profit objectives modeled on UK independent schools.
Grange School maintains an active community with a calendar of events such as World Cancer Day, the COBIS Music Competition in Doha, TEDx Abuja, and a Year 10 Leadership Trip to South Africa. Students also participate in the Dolphin Swimming League and Inter-House Sports, reflecting emphasis on athletics and teamwork. Safer Internet Day assemblies and a range of co-curricular activities are part of community life. The school promotes a broad program of extra-curricular events that connect students with national and international platforms.
Grange School PTA aims to build a community between teachers, parents and students and raise funds for programs that enhance Grange students' learning experience. It funds classroom support such as reading aids, technology support, music programs, library resources, and Chromebook carts. It supports physical education, health and fitness, student enrichment in art and dance, and nature-based learning through the Garden of Learning. It arranges a series of community events throughout the year and provides volunteer support for school activities. The PTA chair can be contacted at pta@grangeschool.com for questions or suggestions. Its aims include fostering close home–school links, providing a forum for discussion, and raising funds for special projects through conferences, workshops and projects.
