CIS was established in 1924 as the Cebu American School and grew from a small five-room tutorial to an Early Years through Grade 12 school by 1986. The original Gorordo Avenue campus in Lahug, Cebu City, moved to Banilad in 1973 on a 2.3-hectare site. In 2000 CIS relocated to its current, purpose-built 3.2-hectare campus in Pit-os. The school offers IB programmes with Diploma Programme authorized in 1999, Primary Years Programme in 2014, and Middle Years Programme in 2021, and it has Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) accreditation since 1996 and Council of International Schools (CIS) membership since 1998. In May 2024, CIS commenced its centennial year with the opening of the 2024-2025 school year.
CIS describes its community as a small, diverse, and genuinely welcoming environment, with small class sizes and a staff that knows each student personally. The CIS Community section lists Bulletin, Alumni Network, Guestbook, and PTA as channels for connection and involvement. CIS also hosts cultural events such as Culture Week and International Day, and maintains an events calendar for the community. There are 28 nationalities in the CIS community.
The CIS-PTA is a non-profit organization run by parent volunteers, in association with the CIS leadership. Its objectives include fostering an effective partnership between parents and the school, providing a forum for parental concerns, offering fun and family-friendly activities, and raising funds to enhance the school's budget. Parents can volunteer on school trips or assist in class activities, participate in PTA Coffee Mornings, contribute skills, or donate to events.
