Let the school know you're thinking of applying — they can share their prerequisites and help you through the process.
It's best to ask — circumstances can change at any time.
Applications to the school and preschool are accepted year‑round. The shortest period you can apply for is one term, but priority is given to full‑year students; if the school is temporarily full, chances of securing a place for only one term are small. The school aims to be inclusive for all children, but due to its size and physical environment, teachers are hired based on class size and there is no additional support staff. The school cannot admit students who require special support. For admitted students who show special needs, an educational assessment must be carried out with the help of the school's resources. If a follow‑up assessment is required, it is arranged and paid for by the guardians. Based on the educational assessment, the school, in cooperation with the guardian, draws up an action plan. The measures in the action plan may include special aids, a special education teacher, a speech therapist, a counselor, a psychologist or a personal assistant. The provision of special aids and staff not already available at the school is financed by the guardians. The school wants all children to develop according to their prerequisites. The school wants to help all students with special needs, but there are limits where the school must say no given the extent of the student's needs relative to the school's resources. Relevant legal provisions: Education Act 2010:800; School Ordinance 2011:185, Chapter 5, Section 3; Regulation on subsidies for the education of overseas Swedish children and youths (SFS 1999:519) §§ 17 and 20. Svenska Skolan i Lissabon is a Swedish international school on the Carcavelos coast between Lisbon and Cascais, a five‑minute walk from the sea and two minutes from the train station. It serves children aged 3 to 12, with preschool, a preschool class, and grades 1–6, small class sizes, and close contact among students, families, and teachers. Instruction is Swedish and follows the Swedish curriculum Lgr22 for preschool through grade 6; the timetable mirrors the Swedish schedule but adds extensions in Portuguese, physical education, and crafts. Specialized teachers cover music, art, crafts, home economics, Portuguese, and physical education. The school is one of the oldest Swedish schools abroad and operates as a member association, encouraging parental involvement, swift decision‑making, and open communication. The after‑school program Fritidsverksamhet supports social‑emotional development with activities such as baking, painting, drawing, sewing, gardening, and swimming when weather allows. The Nordic community includes Norwegian, Danish, and Finnish families, creating a Nordic environment and a focus on individuality and safety.
