Wellbeing and Support

How students are nurtured, understood, and kept safe

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

The school generally does not accept students with special needs, but there are exceptions. As a Swedish international school, there is no obligation to accept students with special needs. This should always be discussed with the principal in advance.

Mental Wellbeing

The school has a part-time school nurse; the nurse's role is somewhat different from Sweden. Vaccinations and height/weight measurements are not performed at the school in Portugal; they are handled by other health services. Each year all students are summoned to health consultations with the school nurse. The school follows the Swedish curriculum.

Svenska Skolan i Lissabon is a Swedish international school on the Carcavelos coast between Lisbon and Cascais, a five‑minute walk from the sea and two minutes from the train station. It serves children aged 3 to 12, with preschool, a preschool class, and grades 1–6, small class sizes, and close contact among students, families, and teachers. Instruction is Swedish and follows the Swedish curriculum Lgr22 for preschool through grade 6; the timetable mirrors the Swedish schedule but adds extensions in Portuguese, physical education, and crafts. Specialized teachers cover music, art, crafts, home economics, Portuguese, and physical education. The school is one of the oldest Swedish schools abroad and operates as a member association, encouraging parental involvement, swift decision‑making, and open communication. The after‑school program Fritidsverksamhet supports social‑emotional development with activities such as baking, painting, drawing, sewing, gardening, and swimming when weather allows. The Nordic community includes Norwegian, Danish, and Finnish families, creating a Nordic environment and a focus on individuality and safety.
