SLISR was founded on 17 September 1988 as the Sri Lankan Embassy International School, the first Sri Lankan international school established off the shores of Sri Lanka under the patronage of the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Saudi Arabia. It began with 11 students and 4 teachers. It is an independent, non-profit, community school governed by a Board of Directors elected from among the parent body. The school is licensed by the Saudi Ministry of Education, affiliated with Pearson Edexcel, and operates three campuses for girls, boys, and kindergarten, serving Toddlers through Grade 12. Today, SLISR serves more than 800 students with about 70 staff.
SLISR serves a multinational student body, with approximately 80 percent Sri Lankan students and others joining from countries such as Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Jordan, Kenya, Eritrea, and Sudan. The school offers a broad range of co-curricular activities and clubs, including Media, Photography, Young Inventors, and Arabic. Recent community initiatives include the launch of the Alumni Association and the Environmental Club, reflecting active engagement beyond academics. An Annual Awards Ceremony recognizes student achievement across subjects and cohorts.
The school is governed by a Board of Directors elected from among the parent body. The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) participates in school life and is documented in coverage of major events. PTA leadership has included individuals such as Shafraz and Irshard, who led the PTA during the 2025 awards event. PTA members were present at the Annual Awards Ceremony alongside staff and students. This participation reflects active family involvement within SLISR's educational life as part of its community structure.
