Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

DNS Málaga is a private Norwegian primary school on the Costa del Sol in Benalmádena. It was founded in 1989 on a farm high up in Benalmádena. It grew and moved to leased premises in the center of Fuengirola. In 2007, the school's board built a brand-new school in Arroyo de la Miel. The school has capacity for 140 pupils. Admission is limited to Norwegian citizens, which is a legal prerequisite for enrollment.

Community

DNS Málaga follows a calendar that blends Norwegian and Spanish events. Holidays and vacations are aligned to allow home travel. The school celebrates Norwegian holidays such as Christmas, Easter, and 17 May. It offers a variety of activities including an annual beach day for introductions, a beach sports day, ski day, and trips to the mountains, local sights, museums and cultural events. Some events are common to the school, while others are organized per class, with additional information shared by email, weekly plans, and occasional information letters from the school.

Parent-Teacher Association

Foreldrenes Arbeidsutvalg (FAU) is the link between parents and the school and consists of a class representative and a deputy from each class. FAU actively participates in students' daily life, organizes activities, and supports various educational and social initiatives. Membership is automatic, and FAU runs a cafe on school grounds once a week; the funds go back to children's activities and environment. FAU supports events such as a Spanish cultural festival, a Christmas workshop, work days, football tournaments, and various excursions; each year FAU provides financial support so that students can travel to cities such as Seville, Granada or Córdoba and to Morocco. The FAU-bua kiosk is open every Tuesday after school.
