A group of German and Swiss families founded a small private school in Puerto de la Cruz in 1909; regular classes began in Santa Cruz in 1919 in the garden house of the German consul, and the two schools merged in 1927 with leadership by Raymond Matthys in 1928 at Numancia 33. On 12 November 1932, a German School Association was formed to sponsor the schools. A dedicated building on Enrique Wolfson 17 in Santa Cruz was inaugurated in 1935, and by 1935/36 the school served German, Spanish, and other European students under six teachers. The Kultusministerkonferenz officially recognized the school in 1963, and a new campus in Tababa Alta opened in 1999. The school has received the Exzellente Deutsche Auslandsschule seal in 2010 and 2016.
