English School Los Olivos began in the 1976-1977 academic year as a British kindergarten located in a Valencian farmhouse at El Plantío-La Cañada, surrounded by century-old olive groves. Its pedagogy blended Montessori and Freinet approaches, with English learning integrated into daily life in a joyful, open, and free environment. In 1981 it expanded to Primary and Lower Secondary education (British studies corresponding to the Spanish EGB) and moved to Campo Olivar (Godella), later occupying a building on Camino de Mas Camarena; in 1984-85 a new building at the back of the site housed all EGB courses (Year 2 to Year 9). The first EGB graduates appeared in 1989; in 1996-97 a Secondary building was added on Avenida de Los Almendros 13, German was introduced in Secondary, and in 1998 the first cohort completed with IGCSE exams. The center consolidated as a British, secular, open, and plural Cooperative sharing British, Spanish and local cultures, with most classes taught in English; its foundations are respect, dialogue, and tolerance; freedom and responsibility; a participatory and critical spirit of knowledge; and a solid humanistic and scientific formation. In 2001-02 Year 12 and Year 13 were added and the first 18-year-old graduates occurred in June 2003, with students prepared for British GCE exams and Spanish university entry. The school has grown while remaining a mid-sized community with close, respectful, and affectionate relationships between staff and students.
