Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

The European School of Alicante was established by the Board of Governors of the European Schools in November 2000, within the framework of the Statute of the European Schools. It began activities in September 2002 for Early Education and Primary, and in September 2003 for Secondary. The first European Baccalaureate pupils left the school in 2005–2006. It is the only European School in Spain of this type, founded in Alicante in 1996 to support the European agency's presence. The school has four language sections—Spanish, English, French and German—and the European Baccalaureate diploma is recognized for university entrance across EU member states.

El Faro is an after-school class set up with EUIPO and the European School to provide after-hours care for EU staff and school personnel. It runs after-school hours with activities and homework support.

The European School of Alicante provides education from Early Years through Secondary, culminating in the European Baccalaureate. A distinctive feature is its language section system, where students enroll in the English, Spanish, French, or German sections, taking core subjects in that specific language. For students whose mother tongue differs, the school provides the SWALS (Students Without A Language Section) program to maintain their native language proficiency. In Secondary year 6, students participate in a mandatory "Work Experience" program, spending two weeks in a professional internship environment to develop practical skills and inform future career choices. The campus includes specific facilities for art, music, ICT, alongside biology, chemistry, and physics laboratories. Extracurricular activities are managed by specialized organizations, Mundosport and Auca, providing sports and creative options. Situated in Alicante, the school emphasizes multilingualism, serving children of European institution staff alongside other local and international families.
