Wellbeing and Support

How students are nurtured, understood, and kept safe

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

ISM provides pastoral care in an inclusive environment that values all students and families, creating a family/community atmosphere where students feel safe and secure. There is fluid communication between home and school to support pupils' social and emotional development. ISM cares about the whole child, not just exam results, and provides a nurturing and supportive setting. A Learning Support Department addresses social-emotional development, working with tutors and managers. The Student Government in Primary and the Student Leadership Team in Secondary mentor younger pupils, reinforcing social and moral development. The ISM House system promotes belonging and provides structure to support social-emotional growth and responsible choices.

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

ISM has an active Learning Support and Special Educational Needs Department. The team includes our school psychologist, school counsellor, and speech therapist, alongside several external specialists, including an occupational therapist. The Department has a series of fundamental objectives designed to improve the quality of education provided, create and consolidate social values, and help weld effective relationships within the school community. Advice, Guidance, Assessment, and Support are provided. It offers 1:1, small group, or whole class support, as appropriate.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

The school teaches in English and follows the English National Curriculum. Early Years Foundation Stage places do not require prior knowledge of English; later years require sufficient knowledge of English to access the curriculum. In the secondary years, many Year 7 pupils take the Cambridge ESOL PET, and Year 9 pupils take the FCE examination. The French department prepares pupils for Alliance Française CAF tests, and as pupils start French in Year 5, there is potential for proficiency in English, Spanish and French.

Mental Wellbeing

ISM has a Learning Support Department that includes the school psychologist and the school counsellor to support pupils' mental wellbeing. The department uses assessment and screening to evaluate emotional, social, and intellectual development and to identify needs. Support is provided 1:1, in small groups, or to whole classes, as appropriate. Pastoral care creates a nurturing environment and maintains open communication with parents. The House system and Student Government promote belonging and social-emotional growth.

Safeguarding

ISM creates a safe and secure environment for students. There is an open door policy for parents and accessible contact information to discuss concerns. The school provides information to parents about their child's education. There is close communication between tutors and school managers, alongside the Learning Support Department, to address all aspects of pupils' social and emotional development. The House system and Student Government contribute to a safe, supportive school culture that promotes belonging and responsible choices.
